HR update April 6, 2020

To keep communication as clear as possible, and archive it for later use, the Office of Human Resources will be sending out updates using this format.

If you have information that you would like to disseminate to all employees, please send that to brittnidegreve@augustana.edu and we will coordinate adding the information to a future HR update.

For now, we would ask that you limit any mass communications to avoid confusion.

Temporary Teams - Career Development

The career development team is using the skills of some new campus members during the COVID pandemic.  When we asked about possible projects on campus, Laura Kestner-Ricketts was quick to respond.

The folks listed below are engaged in researching and developing content for our career resources pages, working to keep students and employers engaged in Handshake, and helping to develop best practices for student employment.  Thanks to the following for their willingness to serve the campus in a new capacity

  • Tammy Lyon, Chemistry
  • Jennifer Milner, Geosciences & WGS
  • Taryn VanEarwage, Athletics

COVID Changes to TIAA Loans and Withdrawals

The CARES Act changed options for employees regarding hardship loans and withdrawals.  TIAA has created a site with details about options that may be available for you.  The tax penalties for withdrawals and time frames for loan repayments have both been changed.

You can explore these options by calling TIAA at 800-842-2252.

In addition, TIAA has created a web hub with information on a number of COVID related topics.

Looking for fitness opportunities - Campus Recreation to the rescue!

Staying at home doesn't mean you still can't take part in fitness and recreation and Intramural events with your friends. Campus Recreation has created some at-home recreation resources to keep students, faculty and staff motivated and fit. The links provide resources to free fitness sites and apps, and more.

  • Students, faculty and staff can resume their favorite group exercise classes online throughout the day, starting April 1st. Go to Zoom and create an account. Use meeting ID 874-475-6242. See schedule below.
  • Campus Recreation also has joined with NIRSA (National Intramural Rec Sports Association) to offer a virtual trivia event for students with other students from across the country! Games are on Wednesdays at 7pm CST. See the  Twitch Channel. Prizes to the top five finishers, and drawings.
  • Don Umland, Director of Campus Recreation, shares some favorite resources at the bottom of this page.

"During these trying times, Campus Recreation is trying to provide some creative fitness and recreation avenues to our campus community to ease stress, add movement to our day and provide some breaks for your physical and mental well-being." said Umland.

Fitness Friday

Thanks to Bettinna Bolger for leading last week’s Fitness Friday workout!  As we continue this series, we’d welcome additional instructors and are happy to assist you with the technology issues to make this happen.  As a reminder, no Fitness Friday this week as the college is closed for Good Friday.

Giving back to the community

Here at Augustana we are blessed to have such a giving community.

Laura Kestner-Ricketts (Career Development) and her mom are fine tuning their sewing skills and helping out Paula Garcia's daughter, a nurse in the Quad Cities. Paula works in Facilites at Olin.
