6 reasons why we love the Quad Cities
As Valentine's Day approaches, we're reflecting on just how much we love the Quad Cities! Not only is our beautiful campus along the banks of the Mississippi River, but it's in one of the four cities that make up the Quad-Cities area. Here are just a few (okay, more than a few!) of the reasons why we love it here:
1. Always something to do
Even in February, in the Midwest, there is something to do every weekend. See what's happening this month at the Quad Cities Botanical Gardens, and check out upcoming exhibitions at the Figge Art Museum. It's a never-ending community party!
The QC comes even more alive in the summer and fall with festivals and farmers markets every weekend plus live-music and games at the best minor league baseball stadium.
2. Always something new to eat
Speaking of always having something to do. Try a new local restaurant in town! We love our dining center (shoutout to Gerber!), but if you want to try something different, there are 700+ restaurants in the Quad Cities.
The restaurant scene off campus is full of flavors for whatever you are craving. Of course, old favorites like Whitey's, La Rancherita and Harris Pizza, or newer favorites, like Me & Billy and QC Pancake House, never disappoint.
There’s always somewhere to get good grub. With a growing number of restaurants on GrubHub, DoorDash or UberEats, it is even easier to dine local with delivery right to your residence hall.
3. The mighty Mississippi River
This river, with its beautiful views, bald eagle sightings and the fact that it runs east to west, is pretty special. But the river gives us more than great views. You can make it your classroom! Yep, you can explore the river on one of our two research boats as part of a class or part of our minor in geographic information science (GIS) and technology.
4. Location, location, location
The Quad Cities is the perfect middle: 2.5 hours to Chicago, 2 hours to Des Moines, 1 hour to Iowa City or Dubuque. It's the starting point for a quick car trip or a little getaway. We even made a Vikings on the road playlist for you. No car? No problem for local adventures. Your Augustana ID lets you ride free on the MetroLINK bus.
5. The Quint Cities
Are we saying that right? Who knows. East Moline is often called the fifth city of the Quad Cities and has a range of restaurants and shops to check out. Just a few miles from campus, it is home to a great live-music scene at the Rust Belt and tons of trails for a riverfront run. And there are 100+ miles of bike trails in the QCA.
6. Twice as nice
Ever heard of Midwest nice? Think twice as (Midwest) nice when thinking about anyone on this campus. Augustana’s environment is so warm and welcoming. We just know you’ll love it here. But don’t take our word for it. Schedule a campus visit and see for yourself! We can’t wait to show you around.
