Map and Munch: Social and Ecological Changes on the Upper Mississippi
Dr. Matt Fockler will give a research talk at the geography department's "Map and Munch." His topic will be "Two-Mississippi : Viewing Social and Ecological Changes on the Upper Mississippi River since the Lock and Dam Project."
Dr. Fockler is an assistant professor of geography and environmental studies.
In 1930, Congress authorized the construction of the lock and dam system on the Upper Mississippi River, to guarantee that it would remain navigable. The system also altered human and ecological systems on the river.
Dr. Fockler used repeat photography and computer mapping to discover how the river has changed since the lock and dam system began.
