Ten Views of Augie: A Historical Geography of Augustana College
Dr. Matt Fockler, assistant professor of geography, will present this year's spring program of the Augustana Historical Society, "Ten Views of Augie: A Historical Geography of Augustana College."
Using maps, documents, and photographs as keystones, Dr. Fockler will describe the geographic evolution of the Augustana College campus in Rock Island from 1872 to the present. He uses creative mapping, "repeat"
photography, and archival research to connect Augustana's past landscapes to the present. Repeat photography involves reshooting a historic photo from the same location. Using this technique, along with overlays and animations, he can describe change over time.
The Augustana Historical Society, founded in 1930, exists to preserve the history of Augustana College, and its relationship to the Lutheran Church and to Swedish-American immigration and culture. Its annual spring program is open to members and non-members alike, free of charge.
Free parking is available in the Centennial Hall lot, located on the northwest corner of 38th Street and 7th Avenue.
