Apply to teach English in China
Since 1988 Augustana College has had an exchange agreement with Central China (Huazhong) Normal University (CCNU) in Wuhan, China. From 1988 to 2025, 82 Augustana alumni have taught English courses at CCNU, a university which has over 30,000 students. Fewer people are hired each year because they need to have some training in teaching English as a second language. One Augie grad is teaching there this year.
CCNU treasures this long and continuing connection. It is eager to hire one or two Augie graduates to teach English courses in its General English Department for academic year 2025-2026 with the opportunity for extending time there.
This teaching opportunity is ideal for students graduating from Augustana in May 2025 in the following disciplines:
- English
- Education
- Asian Studies
- Political Science
However, graduates from all disciplines are welcome to apply.
No prior study of Chinese is required. Individuals who have not had training in teaching English as a second langue would need to commit to completing such a course this summer. Augustana College staff will review the applications and choose one, two or three people to submit to CCNU staff who will make the final selection(s).

Note about the salary: 8,000 RMB (Chinese Yuan) is roughly equivalent to $1,100 USD, at the current exchange rate of 1 USD = 7.24 RMB. The salary could be used primarily for food and travel expenses, given that on-campus housing, utilities and medical insurance are provided. Past Augie alumni who have taught at CCNU have indicated that the salary provides a good standard of living. Average cost of living in Wuhan not including housing/rent is estimated at $550 USD/month.
