Augustana’s Lazlow Ziebel named Lincoln Academy student laureate

Augustana College senior Lazlow Ziebel, a geography and environmental studies major from McCullom Lake, was named a student laureate by The Lincoln Academy of Illinois. He was honored at an Oct. 26 ceremony held at the University of Illinois Springfield.

This is the 50th annual Lincoln Academy Student Laureate program, which recognizes seniors who have excelled in curricular and extracurricular activities from each of the state’s four-year degree-granting colleges and universities.

This year’s ceremony included remarks by the Honorable Ron Spears, the academy
chancellor. Ziebel was one of 50 student laureates recognized, with each senior receiving a Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award certificate signed by Spears and Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a Lincoln medallion, a challenge coin and a $1,000 check.

Augustana President Andrea Talentino nominated Ziebel for this honor because of his engagement in sustainability efforts on campus and his exemplary service as a Community Advisor in Augustana’s residential life program, where he has helped advance diversity and inclusivity at the college.

“Augustana seniors always impress me with their level of commitment to academics and going above and beyond to engage with campus, and Lazlow is no exception,” said President Talentino. “Lazlow has contributed to advancing Augustana’s diversity and inclusivity initiatives, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to recognize him along with The Lincoln Academy.”

Ziebel said he was surprised to learn about his nomination.

“I've always tried to help make Augustana a place where everyone can be comfortable,” he said. “I don't do this because I know people are watching, but rather because I want what is best for the communities around me.”

Ziebel said he believes that fostering a sense of community creates an environment where everyone feels valued and supported.

“I try to keep these values of civic engagement and community in mind in my daily life, on and off campus,” he said. “It is an honor to be named a 2024 Student Laureate, and I will use this award to further promote and pursue the benefits of a life rooted in compassion for others.”
