CORE ideas to get ahead this summer!

Students, if you have extra time this summer, CORE suggests eight ways to explore career interests and possible post-graduation paths. (You don't even have to leave your house for No. 6.)

1. Informational Interviews

• Find people who have interesting careers and schedule a time to meet or talk over the phone.

• Meet with your career coach before summer break to discuss how to conduct this type of informational interview.

2. Job Shadowing

• Want to get a better idea of a job? Find someone to shadow for a couple days.

• Meet with your career coach before summer break to discuss how to find job shadow opportunities.

3. Internships (it’s not too late!)

• Many companies are still looking for interns. Check Handshake for all current internships listings today, and if you need help, meet with your career coach.

4. Volunteer

• Volunteering is a valuable way to explore careers, gain skills and give back. Think about causes that fit your interests and search for organizations that support those causes.

5. Find a summer job

• Check Handshake and other job sites for summer jobs that can help you build transferrable skills.

6. Learn a new skill through LinkedIn Learning

• All you need is a computer. Augustana gives you free access to LinkedIn Learning so you can learn technical skills, soft skills and more. Set up an account anytime, whether you’re on or off campus.

7. Check your Viking Score and complete tasks

• The Viking Score is a career-readiness program to support you through college and post-graduate life.

• You will learn to see connections between your academic choices and your interests, skills and work values. You also will reflect on how academic experiences translate into skills, and how contacts with faculty, alumni and employers create professional networks.

8. Make a game plan for the 2019-2020 school year

• Fall ProFair is Sept. 26, 2019, at Augustana.

• Some companies hire early fall for full-time positions and internships.
