National Eating Disorders Awareness Week
Augustana will mark National Eating Disorders Awareness Week with health screenings, a film and discussion and a lecture on mindful eating.
National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is Jan. 23-27. Events are being coordinated by Merrisa Brown, a communication studies and graphic design major, as a Senior Inquiry project.
During the week, a free online eating disorder screening will be available through college counseling, or for pickup in the counseling office, Founder's Hall, second floor. Appointments with counselors will be available all week.
On Jan. 26, there will be a screening of the film "Still Killing Us Softly 4" on the topic of body distortion in the media. The free film will be shown at 6:30 p.m. in Olin auditorium; the public is welcome.
After the film, a panel will discuss eating disorder treatments and the link between body image and eating disorders.
Panel members will include representatives from support groups, health-care providers and Amy's Gift, a community organization affiliated with UnityPoint Health/Trinity.
The documentary film is based on a lecture by Jeane Kilbourne.
On Feb. 1, Augustana and St. Ambrose University will offer a Mindful Eating presentation by dietitian Sue Clarahan of Iowa City. This will take place at 7 p.m. in the Rogalski Center Ballroom at St. Ambrose in Davenport. All are welcome.
Clarahan was honored as the Outstanding Dietitian of the Year by the Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2007. She is certified as a registered dietitian through the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals.
