Symposium Day–Social Justice

Augustana College's 2015 winter-term Symposium Day on the theme of Social Justice will be on Tuesday, January 20. Faculty, guest speakers and students will discuss race, sexual violence, social awareness and reconciliation.

Four sets of one-hour sessions will include lectures and discussions, films and performances. There will also be multiple opportunities to work directly with the surrounding communities through food drives and other outreach.

Each session will host guest speakers, including, Craig Etcheson, a visiting scholar with the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University, where he specializes in transitional justice; Tammy and Kelly Rundle, filmmakers and owners of Fourth Wall Films; and Dr. Elizabeth Lowenthal, pediatrician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, discussing why children with HIV often go undiagnosed and untreated in the era of effective antiretroviral therapies. The fourth session will conclude with Kimberly Jade Norwood, professor of law and African/African-American Studies at Washington University, exploring "The Myth and Harms of Colorblindness."

The Symposium Day will include several workshops and opportunities to follow up, including ongoing blogs and live debates. WAUG will again partner with the event and will provide live broadcasts and interviews to reach a wider audience. A complete schedule of events is posted at augustana.edu/symposiumday.
