Why did you choose to attend Augustana?
I chose to attend Augustana because of the rigor and prestigious reputation of the Teacher Education Program. Our beautiful campus definitely didn’t hurt either!
Are you where you thought you’d be four years ago?
Absolutely not. My four years at Augustana have shaped me into the person I am today. I never expected to be such an activist in regards to public education and its role in bettering our society and building up our nation’s children. I am excited to begin my career and feel fully prepared to tackle the challenge of continuing to fight the good fight wherever I’m needed.
Who helped you get to where you are now?
My heartfelt gratitude goes out to the inspirational professors and advisors I have had the pleasure of knowing here at Augustana. I have been mentored by so many influential faculty members, especially those in the education and Spanish departments, and I would not be where I am now or who I am now without their guidance and support.
A peak experience?
A peak experience was definitely the summer I spent in South America. I never expected to be impacted to the extent that I was, but I learned so much about who I am as a person, as well as the person I want to be. I was challenged to reflect on my priorities and my values in ways that will continue to inspire me for the rest of my life.
What did you learn about yourself in these past four years that surprised you?
The most surprising thing I’ve learned about myself is how comfortable I am with being uncomfortable. By being open to new experiences and being willing to step outside of my comfort zone, I have had so many diverse opportunities here at Augie that have shaped me and helped me grow, and have forever changed who I am as a person.
How did you use your Augie Choice?
I used my Augie Choice to spend 11 weeks studying in Ecuador and Peru.
What will you miss the most?
Augustana has become my home, and graduating is incredibly bittersweet. I will miss my professors, seeing my best friends on a daily basis, and all of the small parts of campus that hold a special place in my heart.
Advice for the Class of 2018?
Study abroad. There is absolutely no excuse not to when Augustana has so many amazing international programs that span the entire globe. I promise it can and will change your life if you let it.
"It has been an honor to work with Morgan throughout these past years. She is a careful and energetic thinker. She is unafraid to act on her ideas, while always leaving room for good humor and further questions. I have no doubt that she will be an extremely effective and caring educator who, through her combination of practice and critical thinking, will inspire many along her professional and life trajectories. I am one of many to celebrate her work in the Quad Cities community, as a student, a teacher and engaged citizen."
