Why did you choose to attend Augustana?
I was really attracted to the close-knit, down-to-earth community that Augustana provided. Coming from a small high school, I needed a place where I was not just an ID number. I wanted to be known as Hilary, and I felt that way when visiting Augustana.
Are you where you thought you’d be four years ago?
I assumed I would be nearing graduation, but I never imagined I would have learned so much from my college experience. Augie has molded me into the strong-willed and passionate person I am today.
Who helped you get to where you are now?
My parents. They have always been supportive of any decision I make. They listen to me complain about late nights of studying and help me celebrate my big accomplishments. I can’t imagine going through this adventure without them.
A peak experience?
My peak experience at Augustana was definitely my study abroad trip to East Asia. As a young sophomore, I was pushed out of my comfort zone and into a new major with a newfound interest in Asian culture. During my trip, I was given the opportunity to broaden my perspectives and see the world in a new light.
How did you use your Augie Choice?
I used Augie Choice to study abroad on East Asia Term.
What did you learn about yourself in these past four years that surprised you?
I was surprised by my curiosity for other countries and cultures. I came to Augustana with very limited knowledge of anything outside of the United States, and now, I am graduating with a degree in international business and Asian studies and a strong fascination for cultures different from my own.
What will you miss the most?
I will miss the opportunity to actively learn every day. I have made so many wonderful friends, both students and faculty, and I will miss being surrounded by these individuals who feed my curiosity and push me to learn and better myself.
Advice for the Class of 2017?
Don't be afraid to try something new and hang out with people who have different views and interests. Augustana offers so many different opportunities, and you will not regret extending yourself.

It has been a pleasure to have her in class and to oversee her Asian studies research project. I have no doubt that Hilary will do well in her future career."
