Why Augustana?
Augustana was one of the colleges that offered me the opportunity to attend a small school with proximity to a big city such as Chicago, as well as a generous financial aid package. Being an international student meant that I had to make a leap of faith coming here, and now, at the end of my undergraduate career, I can say without a doubt that I am so glad I did.
Are you where you thought you’d be four years ago?
Yes and no…yes, because my plan to graduate with my two majors and a minor and having the Australia internship panned out. No, because I could not have guessed that I would have done so many things in the last four years.
Who helped you get to where you are now?
The people I have to thank most are my parents without whom I wouldn’t be able to see graduation on the near horizon. The most important community to me on this campus has been the Office of International Student Life. It is and was from the very beginning the support that I needed to evolve throughout my college career. My home away from home. At the end of the day, everything it is allows me to learn the meaning of leadership. A person who single-handedly has been providing this invaluable service for the past two years is Danny Kim. His leadership and advice have opened my eyes to the realities of the world and equipped me with the abilities to take them on.
A peak experience?
Sophomore year, it was Holi the Festival of Colors, which I was more than happy to introduce to Augustana. That experience allowed me to successfully live out my childhood right here at Augie. This year the International Street Fest was a cathartic experience for me, having worked with fellow GET (Global Engagement Team) members to support our diverse community.
What surprised you?
Something that surprised me was the extent to which I bonded with Augustana. I couldn’t have predicted that about myself.
How did you use your Augie Choice?
I used Augie Choice to help fund my internship in Australia.
What will you miss the most?
I will miss the friendships and the substitute family that I have made here for myself.
Advice for the Class of 2021?
Keep an open mind and do not be afraid to try new things. Your life will never be boring.
“Savi has a sense of self that is infectious. Seeing her grow over three years into a person who can mentor younger students, lead groups with enthusiasm and be creative has been an absolute pleasure.”
