Why Augustana?
My sister went to Augie, and I was impressed by the biology program that does such a good job of preparing students for graduate work in various areas of the discipline.
Are you where you thought you’d be when you first came to campus?
Definitely! I'm getting ready to graduate and have a seat at the University of Illinois vet school in the fall—this is exactly where I hoped I'd be at this point in my college career.
Who helped you get to where you are now?
My advisor, Dr. Kimberly Murphy, was the most helpful person in getting me where I am now. She was always available when I needed advice on any aspect of my college experience and was the first to introduce the 3-4 pre-vet program with the University of Illinois to me as a freshman.
Peak experience?
My term studying abroad in Ireland was absolutely amazing! While it had nothing to do with my being a pre-vet student, the way the program integrated us into the culture, biology and beauty of the island country was just amazing! It gave me a real appreciate of the wider world out there and was truly a formative experience.
What surprised you?
I've learned that I can be adventurous and explore both my own beliefs and the beliefs of others in order to strengthen my world view.
How did you use Augie Choice?
I used Augie Choice to fund my no-credit internship at Southern Equine Veterinary Clinic in Aiken, S.C.
What will you miss the most?
I will definitely miss the beauty of the campus, but mostly I'll miss the amazing people I've met through Augie.
Advice for the Class of 2022?
When it comes to picking independent research, internships, majors or even open-ended essay topics, make sure you pick a subject you have an interest in and passion for exploring. Especially when it comes to your Senior Inquiry (I know it's a long ways off but still), make sure the topic you're going to spend researching for three months (minimum) is one that you care about and actually want to research.
"As a first-year, Sarah was already incredibly mature. Three years later, I’m still impressed by how she mentors peers, whether in horseback riding or reading/writing. Sarah’s varied interests—biology and clogging, equestrianism and ethics—make her a fascinating colleague. As a pre-vet major, Sarah demonstrates extensive knowledge and fierce care for other creatures. As a tutor, she brings this same knowledge and care into her sessions with humans, coaching us to expand and enhance our thinking and writing."
