Why Augustana?

As a first-generation college student, throughout my college visit process, it became evident that Augustana would provide me with the most welcoming and positive campus climate.

Augustana stood out from other schools because its faculty-student ratio and plenty of opportunities to engage in research with professors.

Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?

When I got to campus, I thought that I wanted to major in biology and environmental studiesl Thanks to Augustana's interdisciplinary approach to education, I took some classes that were outside of my specialty, particularly in geography. After my first geography class, I knew it was for me and declared my new major shortly after! Augustana also allowed me to see things through new perspectives and develop as a person.

Who helped you get to where you are now?

First and foremost, my mom and sister have been my greatest sources of support during my time at Augustana. I am also deeply grateful to my family, friends and loved ones for their unwavering encouragement along the way.

Additionally, I want to express my thanks to my newly found Augustana family, including the Residential Life staff, the environmental studies department, the geography department, CORE and all the friends and relationships I’ve had the privilege of making throughout my journey at Augustana.

I would like to give a special shoutout to Dr. Lashley, Dr. Jenny Arkle and Dr. Strunk, all of whom have reinforced my passion for environmental and humanitarian work.

Peak experience?

One of my most memorable experiences was the privilege of studying abroad twice — once during a J-term in Japan and again in China. It was surreal to travel to a new country with people I had just met at the airport before the flight.

These trips were a vital part of my Augustana journey, providing me with incredible cross-cultural experiences that I will always cherish. Thank you to Dr. Xiaowen Zhang and Nagase Sensei for all the lifelong memories.

What surprised you?

The biggest surprise has come from the unexpected depth of community and connection I’ve experienced, both inside and outside the classroom. Augustana promotes learning outside of the classroom, allowing for bonds to be formed with local community members.

How did you use your Augie Choice?

I used my Augie Choice to fund my J-term trip to Japan. This was an awesome opportunity that Augustana provides, making study abroad more affordable for all students.

What will you miss the most?

I will miss seeing the giant sycamore tree in the lower Quad every day.

Advice for the Class of 2029?

Embrace every opportunity, stay curious and don’t be afraid to step out of your familiar routines. College is a time for growing, learning and making lasting connections, so make the most of it by being open to new experiences and perspectives.
