Why Augustana?

When I visited during my senior year, I could tell the students, faculty and staff cared about each other and valued community. I knew I wouldn’t just be a number at Augustana — I would have people looking out for me.

I also wanted to participate in the arts while studying communication. Augustana’s music and theatre programs provide opportunities for all students to be involved, regardless of major.

Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?

No, but also yes. I began as a psychology major but ended up finding a passion for strategic communication instead. I still do all the things I love, like music, theatre and dance, but I’ve picked up other hobbies along the way, like photography. I think everything I learned about myself has always been there, but Augustana gave me time to find and reinforce what I love and am passionate about.

Who helped you get to where you are now?

So many people! Dr. David Schwartz, Dr. Carolyn Yaschur, Dr. Wendy Hilton-Morrow, Dr. Jon Hurty, Dr. Michelle Crouch, Beth Melton, Zach Bohrer, Dr. Jason Mahn, Pastor Melinda Pupillo, Shelley Cooper, Maureen Holmes, Dr. Jessica Nodulman, Dr. Jennifer Popple, Tobi Matter, Claire Brakel Packer and especially my parents.

This list could go on and on, but each of these people gave me the tools and skills I need to believe in my abilities and work towards a better world.

Peak experience?

My time with the Augustana Choir has been the best part of my college experience. I have so many memories from choir tours, concerts and rehearsals. Augustana Choir has taught me so much about pursuing excellence within a community, and I am so thankful for Dr. Hurty’s direction and the lifelong connections I’ve made.

What surprised you?

I was surprised by how much I learned about myself while studying abroad. I studied in Holden Village and Paris, and I will go to Sweden with the Augustana Choir in June. By pushing myself to explore, I learned to travel independently and gained a greater appreciation for different cultures and places.

How did you use your Augie Choice?

I studied in Paris in January 2025. I took “Music in Paris” with Dr. Randall Hall and explored the city for a month.

What will you miss the most?

I’m going to miss the small things that remind me why I love this place. I’ll miss late nights on the couch with my roommates, walking into choir rehearsal every day, performing in Brunner with my best friends, laughing at a Dance Company practice and hearing Old Main’s bell chimes.

Advice for the Class of 2030?

You’re never too busy to take care of yourself. Listen to your mind and body. Create schedules and routine. Set boundaries. College is challenging, and it’s easy to get caught up in the chaos. Be kind to yourself!

"Sylvia Hughes is one of those students whose impact reveals itself gradually. In class, she was thoughtful, prepared and engaged. Beyond the classroom, Sylvia’s leadership becomes even clearer through the many communities she helps shape. She contributes to the Observer student newspaper, participates in theatre productions and dances with the Augustana Dance Company. Sylvia carries all of this with a humility that makes her easy to underestimate, but her steady dedication and strong leadership will leave a lasting mark at Augustana."
