Safety and security information

24/7 security

Augustana has a team of police officers, public safety officers and dispatchers who provide 24/7 patrols and monitoring. The team monitors all fire alarms and security cameras, and answers the main switchboard, emergency phone number and messages received from the safety app.

The Public Safety office is in the basement of Sorensen Hall. The office works closely with the Rock Island Police Department, Rock Island Fire Department and other first responders

Cameras

Augustana has security cameras spread throughout campus that are monitored 24/7. There are security cameras at the entrances of residence halls, in the lobby area of the residence halls, and in some academic buildings. There are also cameras on the Quad, Slough Path and some parking lots.

Notifications

Augustana Police and Public Safety may issue emails, texts or other warnings and updates. All students, staff, faculty and administrators should sign up to receive Augie Alerts (see below) and make sure their contact information remains up to date. See "About notifications and alerts."

Free A.C.E.S. app

• A.C.E.S.: transportation around campus and immediate surrounding areas. The A.C.E.S. app allows students to request rides and get an estimated time of arrival and arrange pick-up locations. All A.C.E.S. vehicles are clearly marked. Download the app on Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Run, Hide, Fight

Public Safety suggests the Run, Hide, Fight approach for anyone confronted with a violent situation, such as an active shooter. This recommended video, "RUN. HIDE. FIGHT.® Surviving an Active Shooter Event" explains how it works.

Augie Alerts

Augie Alerts is the college's text messaging, email and phone alert system. The college uses Augie Alerts to notify people of emergency information.

Access to residence halls and academic buildings

Westerlin, Andreen, Seminary and Swanson halls all require key cards to enter. TLA residents have keys. Academic buildings are open during typical daytime hours and are locked after hours. The campus community is advised to report any suspicious people and to not allow people they don’t know into any secure building.

Emergency Planning Task Force

More than 10 years ago, the college established an Emergency Planning Task Force. Members of the task force include public safety, facilities, residential life, the dean's office, registrar and communications. The team convenes bi-weekly to plan drills, discuss best practices, revise procedures and rehearse their roles. Augustana College has been recognized for its efforts in emergency planning.

Drills

The college conducts three annual drills: one in the fall, winter and a large-scale drill in the spring. We strongly encourage all members of the campus community to participate. Notifications for drills will be sent via Augie Alerts.
