Why Augustana?
Augustana values academic excellence while providing a supportive, close-knit environment. I was introduced to Augustana through a family friend and was delighted with my campus tour. Augustana made me feel excited for college. I could picture myself participating with confidence in the classroom, making strong friendships and building a future for myself.
Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?
No! I came to school eager to study psychology, but never imagined I would be so involved on campus.
I took on two majors and a minor that brought me joy, made possible by the variety of classes. I became a leader in a club, took a role as technology chair in my sorority, studied abroad (twice!), studied in Houston and graduated a semester early.
I never in a million years would have expected myself to accomplish this and go straight into a Ph.D. program after undergrad, but Augustana made that happen.
Who helped you get to where you are now?
So many people! Augustana has provided great support systems.
CORE, especially Claire Brakel Packer, who supported my graduate search and application journey with such kindness and great advice. Dr. Jennifer Heacock-Renaud, Dr. Kiki Kosnick, Dr. David Crowe and Dr. Meg Gillette, for guiding my WGSS and English journeys. Dr. Heidi Storl, for invaluable career advice.
The entire psychology department, which advised and supported my interest in research and academics with ease, especially Dr. Daniel Corts, Dr. Lisa Milford and Dr. Shara Stough.
I'm deeply grateful to Dr. Jessica Schultz, who inspired me to continue a path in academia. Dr. Schultz has a true passion for her work. Her mentorship both at Augustana and while studying abroad in Guatemala shaped my college experience. She is a strong mentor, deeply compassionate and demonstrates the values I want to continue building in my future.
Peak experience?
Studying abroad in Guatemala. Hands down, the best experience I've had. I was given the opportunity to study and learn about the country and its customs before traveling.
My group learned about cultural competency, spoke (in Spanish) with locals, shadowed community members, met dedicated activists and dug deep in daily reflections.
This experience was thoughtfully created. I learned so much about myself and others, the beauty of Guatemala, and the importance and privilege of an education.
What surprised you?
I did not realize faculty and staff would care so deeply about their students. When I was uncertain about post-graduate decisions, they were more than happy to meet with me, discuss options and give advice.
How did you use your Augie Choice?
I used my Augie Choice in January 2024 to study abroad in Paris for J-term. Through this funding, I was able to explore museums, monuments and cafés, learning about American writers in the 1920s.
What will you miss the most?
I will miss living minutes (if not seconds) away from my best friends. I will miss exploring the Quad Cities, trying new coffee shops and heading out (at any time) for an adventure. I will miss the Arsenal trumpets, Thursday CAP meetings, and Hurts Donut runs with my sorority family. I will miss walking by the Slough, living in a cramped dorm and enjoying the freedom of college.
Advice for the Class of 2030?
You are never done learning. Engage yourself in activities that interest you and expand on your knowledge. Find friends who push you to be your best self. Ask questions, make connections and stay curious. Your time at Augustana will go quickly. Make the most of it.
"I am endlessly impressed with Ava! She continually shows a strong level of commitment to pursuing things she is passionate about. Even while finishing a semester early, she gained both applied and research experience in psychology, traveled abroad, served as the president of the psych/neuro club and was an award-winning writer! When Ava set out to accomplish something, she did it — and she did it exceptionally well. I know she will continue to have this level of success in her Ph.D. program and beyond!"
